Radiology
in Medical Practice
Radiologists are the
medical doctors specialize in treating diseases and injuries using radiology(medical
imaging),procedures such as Magnetic
resonance imaging, computed tomography, X-rays, nuclear medicine etc.
Based on their specialization they are classified
as:
·
Interventional radiologists
·
Diagnostic radiologists
·
Radiation oncologists
Interventional Radiologists:
These radiologists are
the doctors who diagnose patients using invasive techniques
such as MRI, X-rays. They carefully guide the instruments into the body through
small incisions for the targeted treatment. These treatments are for those medical
conditions such as stroke, cancer, uterine fibroid, less pain and recovery
rime when compared to traditional surgeries.
Diagnostic Radiologists:
The use of variety of imaging procedures to access and diagnose the patient’s
condition of the body. The doctor who sent you for testing i.e. radiologist
plays an important role in our health by acting as an expert by choosing proper
exam in operating the equipment. The diagnostic radiologists may also
specialize in these sub specialties.
- Neuroradiology
- Pediatric imaging
- Emergency radiology
- Chest radiology
- Mammography radiology
- Head and neck radiology
Radiation Oncologists:
These are highly
trained radiology doctors who prescribe each cancer treatment plan. They use
- Radiation therapy to treat cancer
- Monitoring patient’s progress
- Appropriate quality care treatment
Radiation oncologists
receive extensive training regarding safe use of radiation to treat disease,
and managing side effects caused by radiation.
Future role of Radiology in Healthcare:
The rapid evolving
changes in healthcare are administered with advances imaging.Radiology has
been distinct medical specialty with unique challenges. The origin of radiology
significantly became difficult in image capturing. Despite pressure in early
1990’s image interpretation technique was developed. Therefore radiologists
became experts in image capture technology, advances in healthcare technology which continue to drive and be driven by
radiology.
Reasons for Radiology with Special Interests:
- Diseases
are not always regulated to one system
- Radiology
is a 24/7 specialty
- The majority
of illness is due to few common disorders.
- Integrated nature of radiology specialization should not be lost.
